Ghana is bidding a solemn farewell to six of the eight people who died in the August 6 military helicopter crash, with a state funeral being held today, August 15, 2025, at Black Stars Square in Accra.
The ceremony has drawn the nation’s top leadership and dignitaries, including President John Dramani Mahama, Vice President Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Bagbin, former Presidents Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and J.A. Kufuor, former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings. Also in attendance are government ministers, traditional rulers, members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and a large number of mourners from across the country.
The fatal crash occurred on August 6 in Adansi Akrofrom, Ashanti Region, claiming the lives of high-ranking officials and military personnel. Among the deceased were Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence; Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology; and Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator.
Others lost in the tragedy included Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the NDC; Mr. Samuel Aboagye, Deputy Director-General of NADMO; Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala; Flying Officer Manden Twum-Ampadu; and Sergeant Ernest Addo-Mensah.
The two Muslim victims were laid to rest on August 10 in line with Islamic burial traditions, leaving today’s service to honour the remaining six. The atmosphere at Black Stars Square is one of deep sorrow as the nation reflects on the contributions and sacrifices of those lost in the line of duty.
