- The Ministry of Sports and Recreation has removed a GH¢58,000 fuel allocation from the Ghana Football Association’s budget for the Black Stars’ team bus ahead of their World Cup qualifier against Chad.
- Officials deemed the amount excessive and said the decision reflects efforts to ensure accountability, especially with players and coach Otto Addo already set to receive winning bonuses of $5,000 and $10,000 respectively.
- Ghana currently tops Group I and will face Chad on September 4, followed by Mali on September 8.
The Black Stars may be chasing World Cup glory, but their fuel budget just got benched.
The Ministry of Sports and Recreation has cut a GH¢58,000 allocation originally earmarked by the Ghana Football Association to fuel the team’s bus during training sessions in Accra. The bus, acquired in 2023, was meant to shuttle players and staff ahead of their departure to N’Djamena for Thursday’s qualifier against Chad.
Ministry officials say the amount was excessive and struck it from the final budget, citing the need for fiscal discipline. With players already guaranteed $5,000 each in winning bonuses — and head coach Otto Addo set to receive $10,000 — the ministry insists the team is well-supported and that trimming excess is part of a broader accountability push.
Ghana currently leads Group I with 15 points from six matches. A win against Chad would solidify their path toward a fifth World Cup appearance. After the Chad game, the Black Stars will return to Accra to face Mali on September 8, before wrapping up qualifiers in October against the Central African Republic and Comoros.
As the team boards its flight, one thing is clear: the fuel may be lean, but the ambition is full throttle.
