Burns, originally from Warrenpoint in County Down, had reportedly lived in the area for several years. Police have arrested a 39-year-old man on suspicion of murder. He remains in custody as investigations continue.

The news has stunned the close-knit community, where violent crime is rare. Local councillor Keith Ratcliffe described a “sense of fear” gripping the village, especially in the quieter part of the estate where many elderly residents live. He noted that the local school was briefly closed as a precaution while forensic teams combed the area.

Sinn Féin MLA Aoife Finnegan also expressed sorrow, saying the atmosphere in the village was heavy with sadness. She praised the community’s resilience and said she believed residents would rally around the victim’s family.

The murder marks the tenth in Northern Ireland in as many weeks, prompting concerns about rising violence and stretched police resources. Chief Constable Jon Boutcher has reportedly considered bringing in detectives from other parts of the UK to support ongoing investigations.
