Otumfuo Kyeame Explains Why Kumasi Goes Silent on Asantehemaa’s Burial Night

Asantehemaa Nana Konadu Yiadom III Passes On
  • A night curfew will be enforced in Kumasi on September 18, 2025, during the final day of Nana Konadu Yiadom III’s burial rites.
  • All residents must stay indoors except essential service personnel (ECG, GWCL, GNFS, Ghana Ambulance Service, GHS).
  • The restriction is purely for public safety; violators will not be executed, contrary to circulating rumors.
  • Traditional executioners, part of the burial procession, may become spiritually possessed during rituals, posing accidental risk to anyone nearby.
  • The Asantehene has instructed executioners to exercise restraint to prevent any incidents.
  • Burial rites run from September 15–18, with orderly filing past of dignitaries and the general public.
  • Outdoor movement will be restricted from 9 pm on the last day to allow a safe and incident-free burial at Breman Baamu.

Kumasi will observe a strict night curfew on September 18, marking the final day of the burial ceremonies for Nana Konadu Yiadom III, the late Asantehemaa.

While essential service workers will still operate, the general public is required to remain indoors.

The measure aims to prevent accidents during the powerful burial rituals, particularly involving the traditional executioners leading the procession.

These executioners, under the influence of ritual practices, may inadvertently cause harm, making the curfew a precautionary safety measure rather than a punitive one.

Rumors that defying the curfew could result in execution have been debunked. Officials emphasize that Asanteman is law-abiding, and the directive strictly safeguards public well-being.

The funeral activities, which began on September 15, will culminate on the last day with the Queenmother’s burial at Breman Baamu.

Filings past by dignitaries and the public are carefully scheduled, with outdoor movement restricted from 9 pm to ensure a safe and orderly conclusion to the four-day ceremonies.
