NDC: Eric Opoku Eyes 2028—Tony Aidoo Says He Won’t Be Around to See It
  • NDC veteran Dr Tony Aidoo has expressed a personal wish not to witness the party’s leadership transition after President Mahama’s tenure.
  • In a reflective interview, the 76-year-old cited political fatigue and age as reasons for his detachment from future succession battles.
  • He emphasized that the success of Mahama’s administration will be critical in shaping the party’s next flagbearer.
  • Aidoo believes a strong performance by Mahama could create momentum for any prospective successor.
  • Meanwhile, names like Eric Opoku and Johnson Asiedu Nketiah are surfacing as potential contenders for the 2028 flagbearership.
  • The NDC is currently focused on governance, while the opposition NPP has already scheduled its flagbearer election for January 2026.
  • Five candidates have entered the NPP race, including Bawumia, Agyapong, and Acheampong.

Dr Tony Aidoo, one of the National Democratic Congress’s most respected elder statesmen, has made a striking admission: he has no desire to witness the party’s succession after President John Mahama’s final term. In a candid interview on Radio Gold, the former Senior Presidential Aide spoke with emotional clarity about his weariness with Ghana’s political landscape and his readiness to bow out of the scene.

At 76, Aidoo’s reflections carry weight. Known for his sharp political analysis and unwavering loyalty to the NDC, he now finds himself detached from the party’s future leadership battles. His remarks come at a time when speculation is mounting over who will lead the NDC into the 2028 elections.

While Aidoo may be stepping back, he made it clear that Mahama’s performance will be the defining factor for whoever steps forward. A successful administration, he argued, would create the political wind needed to carry a successor into power. That wind, however, is still gathering.

Names like Eric Opoku have begun to surface, with the MP recently breaking his silence on ambitions to contest the flagbearership. Prophet Worlasi has also publicly declared Johnson Asiedu Nketiah as the party’s future leader, though the NDC itself remains focused on governance rather than succession.

Across the aisle, the New Patriotic Party is already deep into its preparations. After losing the 2024 elections, the NPP has scheduled its flagbearer election for January 31, 2026. Five contenders have picked up nomination forms, including Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong, Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Bryan Acheampong.
