  • Food truck owners in Paterson often hire security due to frequent targeting.

Paterson’s late-night food scene turned dangerous over the weekend when a group of armed men ambushed customers at a popular food truck.

The incident unfolded just before 1 a.m. on Saturday along Market Street, where about 10 people were gathered waiting for their orders. Surveillance footage shows one masked man suddenly appear with a gun, aiming directly at two women. Within moments, two more accomplices joined him, stripping customers of jewelry, a handbag, and hundreds of dollars in cash.

As the robbery played out, an unexpected twist occurred—an off-duty police officer, hired by the truck’s owner for security, emerged from behind the vehicle. Armed, he charged at one of the suspects, forcing the gunman to flee. Another camera angle revealed the officer chasing the man, who ultimately escaped by leaping into a waiting getaway vehicle.

City officials say it’s not unusual for food truck operators in Paterson to employ private security, particularly in industrial zones where trucks stay open around the clock and are vulnerable to crime.
