The police prosecution revealed that tensions had escalated between Esaase youth and students of Osei Tutu SHS following a mobile phone theft roughly a week before the incident.

On August 27 at around 7:00 p.m., the Esaase youth, including the suspects, allegedly planned to set fire to one of the school hostels.
