Onua TV presenter, Captain Smart, has issued a strong call for the removal of Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, accusing him of failing to act decisively on the controversial Legislative Instrument 2462, which permits mining in forest reserves.
Speaking on Onua Maakye, Captain Smart tied the Attorney General’s inaction to his past role as chairman of Parliament’s Subsidiary Legislation Committee, where he claimed Ayine played a key role in altering the wording of the regulation, paving the way for its approval. He alleged that this decision later enabled thousands of mining licenses to be issued in record time.
Although Ayine was in opposition when the law first passed, Smart argued that his current position as Attorney General gives him full authority to push for its repeal. He compared the situation to other instances in which parliamentary approvals, such as the E-Levy and the Emission Levy, were successfully reversed.
The outspoken host also questioned why the repeal document remains idle despite President John Dramani Mahama’s government committing to scrapping the regulation. He further expressed support for proposals to declare water bodies as security zones to intensify the fight against illegal mining.
Meanwhile, public pressure is mounting on government to take urgent measures against galamsey, with critics insisting that the continuation of LI 2462 only worsens the destruction of forests and rivers.
