Nearly 2,000 Lives Lost in Ghana Road Accidents in Just 8 Months of 2025

A disturbing new report from the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has revealed that 1,937 people died in road crashes across Ghana between January and August 2025.

The statistics paint a troubling picture: 16,348 vehicles were involved in accidents, leading to 10,957 injuries from 9,626 separate cases.

The breakdown showed 5,515 commercial vehicles, 6,647 private cars, and 4,186 motorcycles were implicated in the carnage.

According to Acting Director-General Abraham Amaliba, speeding was the leading cause, contributing to more than 80% of the crashes.

He noted that reckless driving, particularly motorists who flouted speed limits in both cities and rural areas, continued to be a deadly problem.

Other contributing factors included hawkers and pedestrians obstructing roads, poor engineering designs, and inadequate maintenance.

To curb the crisis, the NRSA has proposed reforms to the Road Traffic Regulations (LI 2180), especially for quicker removal of broken-down vehicles, and is advocating for automated speed enforcement.

Mr. Amaliba added that the Authority would intensify education, partner with local assemblies, and prioritize motorcycle safety by encouraging helmet use and protective gear.

However, the Authority’s work faces hurdles such as insufficient funding and staff shortages. Amaliba called for greater government backing to strengthen interventions.

Deputy Transport Minister Dorcas Affo-Toffey, who toured the NRSA’s facilities, praised their efforts and promised stronger ministerial support.

During her tour, she also visited the Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA), where Acting CEO Dr. Frederick Apoh announced that passenger operations on the Tema–Mpakadan rail line will begin on October 1, 2025, with additional projects underway on the Tema–Nsawam and Takoradi–Nsuta routes.

He stressed that the expanding rail network would open up job opportunities for young people.

At the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Acting CEO Julius N. Kotey revealed that the new sticker system had boosted issuance from 2,000 to 12,000, with plans to replace all number plates in 2026 to meet global standards.

He added that new systems had been deployed to improve operations at offices in Adenta, Bole, Dormaa, Bechem, Asamankese, and other areas.

Madam Affo-Toffey reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting these agencies to deliver better services and reduce the devastating toll of road accidents.
