The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) has ordered the closure of several factories in Afienya and surrounding areas after discovering that their products fail to meet national quality standards.
Laboratory tests conducted by the Authority revealed that materials and finished goods, including mattresses and related items, did not comply with approved specifications. Among the affected companies are ZXZ Company Limited, Bright Home Company Limited, A5 Homes Company Limited, Hua Sheng Garment Company Limited, and Jim Yuan Jia Company Limited. All remain shut pending further investigations.
During the operation, GSA officials seized large quantities of uncertified products, securing them for further action, which may include destruction of items that cannot be safely repurposed.
According to the Head of Special Projects at GSA, George Anti, some factories had begun using materials outside approved specifications and were operating without the necessary licences. The Authority also sent undercover teams to obtain samples for testing, confirming that the products were substandard.
Anti emphasized that the GSA’s mandate is to protect consumers and uphold trade standards, and it cannot guarantee the safety or suitability of products being mass-produced without compliance.
Previous efforts to guide the companies toward proper licensing and adherence to standards—including engagements at the Ministry of Trade level—were largely ignored. As a result, the Authority took decisive action.
While reaffirming that Ghana remains open for legitimate business, Anti stressed that only responsible enterprises producing safe, compliant products will receive the Authority’s support.
The move underlines the GSA’s commitment to protecting consumer health and ensuring that all products on the market are safe and fit for purpose.
