The founder of Open Arms Ministry, St Sark, has strongly condemned President John Dramani Mahama, accusing him of failing to take decisive steps against illegal mining, known locally as galamsey.

St Sark expressed disappointment that despite campaign promises, the government has not declared a state of emergency to curb the destruction caused by galamsey operators. Speaking at his church, he called for an immediate halt to all mining activities except deep mining to protect the nation’s environment and future.

The spiritual leader highlighted the severe consequences of galamsey, citing loss of lives, birth deformities, health challenges, and environmental devastation caused by a few profit-driven individuals. He rejected claims that halting mining would lead to unemployment for the estimated 4 million involved, pointing out that over 90% already hold other jobs as drivers, masons, mechanics, steel benders, and carpenters.

St Sark emphasized the plight of over 15 million farmers whose lands are being destroyed, questioning why their livelihoods are overlooked while mining jobs are protected. He warned that prioritizing the miners over farmers, who feed the nation, is a grave misstep.

Drawing on biblical references, St Sark labeled anyone destroying water bodies, forests, or farmland—or allowing such destruction—as “enemies of God.” He urged President Mahama to act decisively and stop excusing these individuals, stressing that previous meetings with civil society organizations have not translated into meaningful action.

The call from St Sark underscores the growing frustration among civic leaders and faith figures over the persistent damage caused by illegal mining in Ghana.
