A devastating fire engulfed a section of the Kwapong Nursing and Midwifery Training College in the Asunafo South District of the Ahafo Region on Friday morning, leaving destruction in its path.
The Ghana National Fire Service confirmed that its officers responded to an emergency call around 7:12 a.m., prompting the Kukuom Fire Station to deploy firefighters to the campus. They were later supported by a reinforcement team from Goaso. After intense efforts, the fire was brought under control by 8:45 a.m. and completely put out by 10:26 a.m.
Initial findings reveal that the blaze began in a single room on the first floor of a one-storey dormitory block before quickly spreading across six additional rooms. The incident destroyed several student belongings including clothing, study materials, beds, and other personal effects. Parts of the building’s roofing and ceiling were also severely damaged.
Two fire extinguishers stored on the affected floor ignited during the chaos, contributing to the danger faced by both students and responders. Fortunately, firefighters managed to stop the flames from reaching the ground floor, and there were no injuries or deaths recorded.
Authorities are continuing their investigations to identify what exactly triggered the fire.
