Parliament Minority Alleges Legal Breach by GoldBod Over Hidden Financial Records

The Minority in Parliament is demanding that the Ghana Gold Board explain how it has been financing its activities, after new information contradicted earlier government announcements about initial funding for the agency.

Speaking to journalists on Friday, October 31, 2025, the Minority revealed that a response received from the Ministry of Finance two days earlier stated that the institution had not provided any financial releases to GoldBod since its launch — despite officials previously indicating that $279 million had been earmarked to support its establishment.

This development has raised eyebrows among opposition lawmakers who insist that the agency’s current level of activity does not align with its reported lack of government funding. They argue that purchasing vehicles and engaging brand ambassadors would require substantial financial resources — resources the Ministry claims it has not supplied.

Lawmakers also expressed alarm that the Ghana Gold Board’s website does not contain statutory information required by the Act that created it. They point to Section 42 of the law, which obliges the Board to make its operational and financial reporting public on a quarterly basis — a provision they say has been ignored since its inception in April.

The Minority cautions that this lack of transparency could jeopardize confidence in Ghana’s efforts to monitor and responsibly source gold, particularly at a time when international partners such as the World Bank and European Union are closely observing anti-galamsey reforms.

They further called for clarity on where the gold being handled by the Board originates, arguing that traceability is central to the reforms championed by government.

The caucus wants GoldBod to immediately publish detailed disclosures about its revenue sources, procurement processes, and gold supply chain to assure Ghanaians that the Board is operating within both legal and ethical boundaries.
