Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has unveiled an ambitious nationwide agricultural mechanisation programme, signaling the country’s determination to protect its sovereignty in the wake of external threats. The move comes after former US President Donald Trump hinted at potential military intervention over alleged religious violence in Nigeria.
During a public address on November 2, 2025, Tinubu emphasised that Nigeria will not bow to foreign pressure once it can fully leverage its internal resources and economic strength. He framed the mechanisation programme as a cornerstone for achieving food sovereignty and long-term economic stability.
The initiative will see every region equipped with mechanised centres for agricultural training and operations, aiming to modernise farming practices and strengthen the nation’s food security. Tinubu stressed that eliminating hunger is critical to tackling poverty, presenting the project as a dual solution to economic and social challenges.
The announcement follows Trump’s statement on November 1, 2025, in which he warned of potential military action and threatened to withhold US aid if the Nigerian government failed to act against violence targeting Christians. In response, Nigerian authorities reaffirmed the country’s sovereign right to manage its security and development policies independently, rejecting any form of coercion.
Through this bold agricultural plan, Tinubu seeks to turn the threat of foreign intervention into an opportunity for domestic growth, modernisation, and self-reliance, positioning Nigeria to reduce dependency on external support while securing the wellbeing of its citizens.
