The Western Central Regional branch of the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) has rescued a 15-year-old Nigerian girl who was trafficked from her home in Enugu State to Tarkwa, Ghana, for sexual exploitation.
The successful operation was initiated after the victim’s father, Onuigo Onuigbo, reported his daughter missing in October 2025. A critical breakthrough came on October 24, when the father received a distress call from the girl herself, revealing she had been trafficked and was being held in Tarkwa.
Acting on this information, police investigators moved in and arrested a 25-year-old woman, Joy Ogbonna, at Aboso near Tarkwa. According to the police, Ogbonna had allegedly confined the teenager and was forcing her into prostitution.
The investigation revealed that another suspect, identified as Golden Blessing, had initially deceived the victim with a promise of a cleaning job in Lagos, Nigeria, before trafficking her across the border and handing her over to Ogbonna. Golden Blessing is currently evading capture and is believed to be hiding in Nigeria.
A key turn in the case came when a concerned neighbour assisted the girl in contacting her father, an act that directly led to the police intervention and her eventual rescue.
Medical examinations following her rescue have confirmed that the teenager is pregnant.
In a statement signed by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Beatrice Turkson, the police confirmed that suspect Joy Ogbonna remains in custody and will be arraigned before court. The statement also reaffirmed the commitment to apprehend her accomplice, Golden Blessing.
The Western Central Regional Police Command commended the public for their vigilance and assistance in the case, which was crucial in securing the victim’s rescue.
