Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi and the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, has applied to the High Court in Accra to have his frozen bank accounts released. Wontumi arrived at court on November 13, 2025, accompanied by his lawyer Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, to file the application.
The accounts were frozen in April 2025 by the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) as part of ongoing prosecutions against him in two separate cases relating to alleged illegal mining activities. The freeze covered accounts linked to his company, Akonta Mining, as well as Hallmark Civil Engineering Limited.
The FIC, citing the Anti-Money Laundering Act, 2020 (Act 1044), instructed financial institutions to immediately freeze all accounts associated with the entities until further notice. Wontumi’s legal team is now seeking the court’s intervention to lift these restrictions and restore access to the accounts while the cases progress.
