Grief overwhelmed the home of one of the six young women who lost their lives in a stampede at Accra’s El-Wak Stadium during a military recruitment exercise. Family members of the deceased, Yvonne Amoateng, were inconsolable as officials from the government and the military, including the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection and the Deputy Minister of Defence, visited to offer condolences.

Yvonne had joined the exercise with hopes of serving her country, but the sudden surge of applicants at the stadium led to a tragic crush that claimed her life along with five others. The Ghana Armed Forces explained that recruits rushed the gates ahead of the scheduled start, breaching security protocols.

Several other applicants were injured and have been receiving urgent treatment at the 37 Military Hospital. The Armed Forces assured the public that emergency teams were working around the clock to stabilize those affected, while investigations continue into the causes of the stampede.
