NPP flagbearer hopeful Kennedy Agyapong has called on Akans, especially in the southern regions, to unite behind his campaign for the party’s top position, cautioning that failure to do so could weaken their influence within the party.
Speaking to delegates in Kyebi on November 12, 2025, Agyapong stressed that unity among Akans is essential, warning that disunity could leave them marginalized in NPP politics. He contrasted the situation with northern political actors, who he said are rallying behind a single candidate and using coordinated support to strengthen their position.
Agyapong described the Akans as “royals” and urged them not to allow their majority status to be overshadowed by disorganization. He argued that failure to unite risks relegating Akans to a subordinate role within the party structure.
Highlighting his concerns about tribal influence, he claimed some northern groups perceive support for him as a betrayal of regional loyalty. He urged Akans to prioritize solidarity and ensure their voices and interests are not sidelined.
Referencing comments by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, about the importance of protecting the interests of Asantes, Agyapong insisted similar principles should guide Akyems in political matters. He emphasized that allowing minority groups to dominate decision-making in the NPP undermines the majority and weakens their standing in national politics.
In his remarks, Agyapong reiterated the importance of Akan unity, framing it as essential for safeguarding influence and ensuring the community’s concerns are addressed in the party’s leadership decisions.
