A man from Burton Township in Zambia, identified as Clifford Chisangano, reached his breaking point after nearly three decades of marital struggle. He appeared before the Livingstone Local Court, deeply emotional as he sought to bring his 28-year marriage to an end.

Chisangano explained to Principal Magistrate Mubita Mubiana and Senior Magistrate Esau Daka that his wife, Moono Simushi, had become a threat within their home. He alleged that she repeatedly assaulted him, behaved aggressively during disagreements, and created an environment where he no longer felt safe. He had even submitted medical documentation at the Mbita Police Post to show the injuries he claimed to have suffered.

According to his account, Simushi’s behaviour escalated to the point where she destroyed his national registration card, set his school-related documents on fire, and discarded his antiretroviral medication. He believed the situation had grown so dangerous that remaining in the marriage could lead to tragic consequences.

The pair married on September 14, 1998, under customary law and share five children aged 26, 23, 17, 7, and 1 year and 7 months. When given the chance to respond, Simushi acknowledged the prolonged difficulties in their relationship but argued that her husband also contributed to the conflict, claiming he ignored her and the children whenever he had money.

After hearing both sides, the Livingstone Local Court ruled in favour of dissolving the marriage, according to Zambia Daily Mail.
