Nana Kwame Bediako, popularly known as Cheddar and leader of the New Force, is facing legal action after the human rights organization Democracy Hub filed a defamation suit against him. The group claims Cheddar falsely accused their September 2024 protest against illegal mining of being politically motivated.

The suit seeks a court declaration that Cheddar’s statements, made on or around September 25–26, 2024, were false, malicious, and damaging to the organization’s reputation. It argues that his remarks, whether delivered via video, text, or orally to third parties, harmed the integrity and public standing of Democracy Hub.

Cheddar has not issued a response to the suit as of now.

The controversy began when Cheddar posted a video on his X account in which he suggested that the three-day ‘#ReoccupyJulorbiHouse’ protest, along with the widely publicized ‘#FixTheCountry’ demonstrations, were orchestrated by political actors rather than being genuine civic actions. Without naming anyone specifically, Cheddar asserted that some politicians were exploiting youth-led protests to advance personal agendas, diverting attention from the issues at hand, including illegal mining.

He encouraged the public to investigate for themselves to understand the alleged political manipulations behind these movements. Cheddar maintained that the protests were being funded by those with political interests, rather than solely focusing on demands such as ending galamsey activities.
