Heath Goldfields Ltd. has confirmed that three illegal miners lost their lives inside its Prestea concession in the Western Region after entering restricted underground areas. The victims reportedly used unauthorized routes to access abandoned sections of the mine and became trapped.

Local reports indicate that as many as 11 illegal miners might have been caught in a collapsed part of the site over the past weekend. The company expressed sorrow over the loss and extended condolences to the families and residents of Prestea.

Authorities, including the Ghana Police Service, the Minerals Commission, and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), are assisting with recovery operations and investigations. Heath Goldfields commended emergency personnel for their swift response.

The affected site was previously operated by FGR until its license was revoked in February 2024. Despite being inactive, illegal miners reportedly entered through forbidden tunnels. Some reports suggest suffocation may have contributed to the fatalities after smoke, possibly from a small underground blast, filled the area.

Heath Goldfields reiterated its commitment to safety and security across all its concessions and assured the public, regulators, and local leaders that responsible mining and community support remain priorities. The company’s community relations team is working closely with families to provide updates and assistance.
