Tensions in Kwahu escalated following the abduction of the Kwahuhemaa, Nana Adwoa Gyemfua III, in the early hours of November 17, 2025. The Queen Mother was reportedly taken during an assault on the palace of the Paramount Chief by unidentified individuals.
A video circulating widely on social media on November 19, 2025, captured local traditional leaders performing rituals involving a bottle of schnapps, seemingly invoking curses on those allegedly linked to the abduction, including other traditional leaders and their families.
Authorities acted swiftly, and Inspector General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohonu intervened, ensuring the safe release of the Queen Mother. The Ghana Police Service confirmed her release and announced that the Police Professional Standards Bureau had been tasked with investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. Any officers found to have been negligent or complicit will face disciplinary action.
Security has since been stepped up in the Kwahu area to prevent further unrest, as both law enforcement and traditional authorities work to stabilize the situation.
