A planned anti-galamsey operation in the Obuasi enclave took a tragic turn on November 19, 2025, when a five-member team from the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) was involved in a serious accident near the Obuasi Airport. The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources later confirmed that one officer died on the spot, while the remaining four sustained severe injuries.
According to the Ministry’s Media Relations Officer, Paa Kwesi Schandorf, the officers were en route to carry out a major operation as part of the national push against illegal mining activities. The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources has conveyed sympathy to the family of the deceased officer and expressed concern for the injured members of the taskforce. He assured them of full support during their treatment and recovery process.
