The Minister of State responsible for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has mounted a firm defence of the current administration during discussions on the 2026 Budget, insisting that the government stepped into office only to meet an economy that had already crumbled.

While contributing to the parliamentary debate, he argued that the economic situation inherited from the previous administration was the worst the country had ever recorded. He noted that national economic assessments rely on verifiable indicators, not political framing, and pointed out that available data showed the former government had pushed the country into deep financial distress.

He reminded the House that Ghana experienced its first sovereign default under the former administration, a moment he described as historically damaging to the country’s economic reputation. That default, he added, triggered a collapse in the nation’s creditworthiness, resulting in a downgrading so severe that international agencies tagged Ghana as a high-risk borrower.

According to him, the extent of the decline was so alarming that public conversation at the time often likened the state of the economy to rubbish — a local expression he used to illustrate how badly the fundamentals had deteriorated before the current government assumed office.

Kwakye Ofosu urged the Minority to recognise the magnitude of the fiscal crisis they left behind rather than shifting blame. He maintained that acknowledging the depth of the economic decline was essential for meaningful dialogue and for positioning the country on a path to recovery.
