The Hohoe Member of Parliament, Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpo, created a stir during the 2026 Budget debate by entering the chamber with tangible evidence of food prices. On Wednesday, November 19, 2025, he carried a 5kg bag of packaged rice and a bottle of cooking oil to support his economic argument.
Tsekpo explained that concerns had been raised by Minority MPs regarding rising food costs and claims that Ghanaians were struggling to afford basic staples. To verify these claims personally, he visited the market and purchased the items himself.
He highlighted a dramatic difference in prices compared to the previous year, saying the rice, which had sold for GH¢164 last Christmas, was now available for GH¢99, while the cooking oil had dropped from GH¢60 to GH¢39. The MP attributed this decline to recent government interventions, praising their impact on everyday market prices.
His demonstration sparked reactions in Parliament, as colleagues watched him use real products to illustrate his point, reinforcing his message that the economy has improved since the previous administration left it in a challenging state.
