Police in Malawi are investigating the disappearance of four German Shepherds from the presidential palace in Lilongwe during the political transition in September. The investigation has led to the arrest of Godfrey Arthur Jalale, the former deputy chief of staff at State House under ex-President Lazarus Chakwera. Jalale denies involvement in the incident.

Authorities confirmed they obtained a search warrant for Chakwera’s residence following information that the missing dogs might have been kept there, but reports that Chakwera himself had been detained were refuted. The four dogs, valued at roughly $2,300 (£1,700), were removed from Kamuzu Palace between September 19 and October 4.

The theft coincides with a period of political upheaval after Chakwera lost the September election to President Peter Mutharika, who had previously served as president from 2014 to 2020. Local media indicate that state property was reportedly taken from both Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe and Sanjika Palace in Blantyre.

Amid the investigation, Malawi Congress Party MPs boycotted parliamentary sessions and gathered at Chakwera’s residence, expressing concern over increased police activity. Chakwera, a former pastor, has largely maintained a low profile since the election, making only a brief public appearance to announce his acceptance of a Commonwealth appointment to mediate post-election tensions in Tanzania.

President Mutharika returned to office promising a “return to proven leadership,” but the country faces deep economic challenges, including severe shortages of fuel and foreign currency. Questions have been raised about his ability to govern effectively at age 85, given concerns about his public appearances and stamina.
