3 Arrested for impersonating Speaker of Parliament, IGP

The Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team of the Ghana Police Service has arrested three persons for impersonating the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin; the Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, and other personalities.

The suspects – Gideon Awudi, 25; Edem Soku, 33 and Judith Soku, 31, impersonated the personalities on social media to defraud unsuspecting victims.

Activities

A police report said the suspects were also involved in Momo fraud, credit card fraud, airtime sales fraud and online sales fraud across various social media platforms.

They were arrested at Sogakope and Dabala after a sustained intelligence-led operation within Sogakope, Dzodze and Penyi areas of the Volta Region.

They are currently in custody, assisting investigations.

Cases up

Issues of impersonation have become rampant particularly on social media where the impersonators clone the accounts of the victims to defraud people.

They usually use false pretense of job offers, recruitment in the security services and business opportunities to demand monies from the victims.
