The Recording Academy has announced that Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti will be posthumously honoured with a Special Merit Lifetime Achievement Award at the upcoming 67th Grammy Awards.

The recognition marks a historic milestone, as Fela becomes the first African artist to receive the distinguished award, joining an elite list of celebrated music greats such as Whitney Houston, Paul Simon, Cher and Chaka Khan.

According to Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr., the selected honourees represent “an extraordinary group whose influence spans generations, genres, and the very foundation of modern music.”

The Academy described the Nigerian legend as the driving force behind Afrobeat, noting that his fearless creativity and sonic innovation reshaped African music and left a lasting imprint on global soundscapes.

Earlier this year, the Academy also inducted Fela’s iconic album Zombie into the 2025 Grammy Hall of Fame, a move widely seen as recognition of his bold artistic vision and timeless influence.
