Dr Fred Awaah, the newly sworn-in Chairman of the Governing Board of the National Sports Authority (NSA), has outlined an ambitious vision to transform sports from mere social entertainment into a significant contributor to Ghana’s economic growth.

In an exclusive interview with Graphic Sports following the board’s inauguration ceremony at the Conference Room of the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, Dr Awaah expressed deep gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama and the Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, for the trust placed in the new board.

He praised the careful selection of board members, drawn primarily from the sporting fraternity, academia, industry and politics, describing the group as one of high calibre and diverse representation from various stakeholder organisations.

“With this team, I am confident we will succeed in shifting sports into an enterprise that directly supports national economic development,” Dr Awaah said.

He said the board aims to substantially increase the sector’s current 1.4 per cent contribution to Ghana’s GDP by the end of its tenure, in full alignment with the government’s broader economic transformation agenda.

Assuring all sporting associations and federations of fair treatment, the Chairman stressed that the board will adhere strictly to the President’s directive of giving equal attention to every sporting discipline in order to achieve holistic development across the sector.

Dr Awaah further committed the board to forging mutually beneficial partnerships with local and international investors to develop both existing and potential human resources within Ghana’s sports industry, construct modern sports infrastructure in every region of the country, promote stronger sports values, ethics and integrity and harness sports as a vehicle to advance the sports-related objectives of the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
