Ghana Athletics (GA) has assured its preparedness to execute a flawless hosting of the 24th Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) African Senior Athletics Championships when Accra stages the 2026 edition in May next year.
Having already awarded the hosting rights to Ghana following bid success over Botswana at its Congress in Cameroon in June 2024, the CAA, last week, confirmed that the event for Africa’s top athletics stars, billed for the University of Ghana Stadium in Legon, will run from May 12-17, 2026.
This development has been eagerly welcomed by Ghana Athletics, who have already initiated processes to ensure a smooth hosting of the continental athletics fiesta to be preceded by a CAA Council meeting in Accra on May 10-11, 2026.
“Accra is ready to host the rest of Africa. We engaged the government before we went in for the bid, so we have the full government support through the Ministry of Sports and Recreation,” a Vice-President of GA, Charles Osei Asibey, told the Graphic Sports.
“We have had a series of meetings with the Sports Minister, we have sent the budget to Cabinet and the Chief of Staff has approved, so Ghana is ready for a world-class event. A lot of engagements are ongoing, as the GA Secretariat is working and preparing already,” he said.
A Local Organising Committee (LOC) is in the pipeline to be inaugurated soon to take over officially to handle logistics, accommodation, transport, venue and final preparations towards the continental tournament.
Ghana hopes to explore the experience of hosting a hugely successful Accra 2023 African Games to enrich the Accra 2026 Athletics Africa African Senior Championships.
Aside from the demonstration of the fabled Ghanaian hospitality, the country’s athletics officials are also determined that the country will excel in the track and field competition, too.
“Ghana will not just host the African Championships; we hope to impress the world as well, in terms of performance,” Osei Asibey said.
“We have a standing team, but we are also working on the next generation of stars. So, definitely, our athletes will be ready,” he said.
