In a significant move to reshape Ghana’s political landscape, the Constitutional Review Committee has formally recommended extending the presidential term from four to five years. The proposal was presented to President John Dramani Mahama on Monday, December 22, 2025, by the Committee’s Chairman, Professor Henry Kwasi Prempeh.

Professor Prempeh argued that the current four-year term is insufficient for effective governance, stating the extension is “carefully designed to enhance governance efficiency.” He was, however, unequivocal in shutting down any possibility of a leader extending their stay beyond two terms. “We couldn’t find a place for a third term; there was really no demand for it, and nobody seemed to support it,” he emphasized.

The Committee’s mandate focused on resolving practical challenges stemming from earlier constitutional reviews, including the 2010 Commission and the 2023 Consultative Committee. Their newly compiled report, a product of months of work, proposes a series of amendments to the 1992 Constitution aimed at strengthening governance, boosting citizen participation, and tackling pressing national issues.
