The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) has called on the government to address the growing presence of foreigners in Ghana’s retail market in the coming year.
According to the association, Ghana’s retail market should remain reserved for citizens in line with existing trade regulations.
Speaking during a visit to the Makola Market by the Minister of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, together with the Mayor of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, the President of GUTA, Clement Boateng, said that in 2026, the government should prioritise the interests of Ghanaian traders and retailers.
“Foreigners are increasingly taking over the retail aspect of trade from our citizens. I have therefore suggested to the Minister that the Act regulating this sector should be reviewed,” he said.

He added that these foreigners are swiftly dominating the retail market, which is significantly affecting the local market and price determination.
“They should work on this so that foreigners do not completely take over the retail space,” he added.
