The University of Ghana has published a new fee schedule for the upcoming academic year, showing increases of over 25% for all programs.
The adjustments have sparked concern among the student body and parents, who cite the lack of prior consultation and the potential for financial hardship.
According to the provisional schedule, new students enrolling in the College of Humanities will see fees rise by 34%, from GH¢2,319 to GH¢3,110.
Continuing students in the same college face a 27% increase. Similar hikes are reflected across all colleges, including the School of Law, Health Sciences, and Basic and Applied Sciences, with rises generally falling between 25% and 35%.
A notable portion of the overall increase is attributed to a sharp rise in third-party charges. These fees have jumped from GH¢255 last year to GH¢767 for incoming students and GH¢455 for continuing students. The bundled charges include items such as:
- A GH¢300 SRC Hostel Development Levy
- A GH¢100 contribution to the University’s 75th Anniversary Legacy Project
- SRC welfare dues of GH¢50
- A mandatory Telecel data package for freshmen costing GH¢312
Students and families have expressed frustration that the new structure was implemented without clear prior communication from university management. There are growing calls for the administration to provide a detailed rationale for the steep increases, with many warning that the added costs could limit educational access and place severe strain on household budgets.
