E/R: Two Chinese Nabbed for Allegedly Polluting Birim River, Cocoa Farms Destruction

Two Chinese nationals are in the grips of security personnel for allegedly engaging in illegal mining activities at Pankese in Birim North.

Their activities, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources said, have caused significant destruction to forests, cocoa farmlands and the Birim River.

Identified as LI YONGJIN and Nou Chin Haw, they were arrested on December 3, 2025, by a NAIMOS Taskforce deployed in the Eastern Region.

As part of the activities of the taskforce, two excavators used by the 2 Chinese illegal miners were demobilised by removing their Monitors and Control Boards; destroyed several illegal mining equipment and items; and burnt all makeshift structures erected at the site.

It also reported the seizure of one Toyota TUNDRA Pickup with Registration number AS 8120 -20 found at the site and used by the 2 Chinese illegal miners.
