Gunfire and anti-aircraft fire were seen over Caracas overnight as the Venezuelan capital remains on edge following the US capture of President Nicolás Maduro. Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado has vowed to return home “as soon as possible,” but senior White House aide Stephen Miller dismissed calls for the US to install her as Maduro’s replacement. US President Donald Trump said he considers himself in charge of Venezuela.
Miller said the administration is using its military threat to control Venezuela’s economy, also adding that Greenland “should be part” of the US. Leaders from major European powers expressed support for the Arctic island in a joint statement issued earlier today.
Maduro and his wife pleaded not guilty to drug and weapons charges in a US court yesterday and chose not to immediately fight their detention.
