A widow, mother and caregiver of a man suffering from autism has become the beneficiary of a free one-bedroom house built and donated by Joberg Foundation, the charity arm of Joberg Ghana Limited, an indigenous construction company.

Mary Grunitzky, a kenkey seller, who has single-handedly been taking care of her autistic son for more than 20 years, has been presented with the keys to the house by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Joberg Ghana Limited and Joberg Foundation, Joseph Magnus Martey Marteye.

The house, situated at Katamanso in the Kpone Katamanso Municipality in the Greater Accra Region, shares a wall with a similar house donated by Joberg Foundation in 2024 to Bernice Amoah, another mother of a child suffering autism.

The house comes with a living room, bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, porch, fully installed solar panels, and a spacious compound.

This is the fifth time Joberg Foundation has given out a free house to the vulnerable, with the initiative centred on helping the poor and vulnerable, but hard working individuals, who are engaged in some form of employment or trade, but finding it extremely difficult to make ends meet.

Appreciation

Receiving the house, Ms Grunitzky could not hide her emotions as she broke into tears of joy, showing appreciation to Joberg Foundation for the kind gesture.

According to her, life had been extremely difficult for her and her son due to the challenge in finding a proper place of abode.

“We have been through a lot, especially in terms of getting a proper accommodation. Due to the lack of funds, we have been moving from one place to another. This is a blessing, and we thank God and Joberg Foundation,” she said.

Motivation

The CEO of Joberg Ghana Limited said he was motivated to help the vulnerable with free houses due to the cost and other difficulties associated with housing.

He said as a successful real estate company that had constructed and sold many residential homes in many prime areas in Accra, Joberg Ghana Limited deemed it fit to give back to society and support those in need with free houses.

“If the middle class are having difficulties with rent and getting their own houses, then you can imagine what those at the lower level of society are going through,” he said.
