The Monarch of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has discouraged the use of brute force by the Ghana Police Service in the discharge of its duties.
His Majesty reminded them to prioritise professionalism and the integrity of the Service.
“Your duty is not to beat people. Your duty is to make sure that you educate and make sure of a peaceful atmosphere,” His Majesty said while addressing the Police Management Board on January 6, 2026, in Accra.
The Asantehene also urged the police leadership to acknowledge the rot and corruption within the space as the first step towards addressing them.
These, Otumfuo noted, give a bad image to the Police Service.
“We all have to accept that and work toward that. You don’t go out there and take money when you have to check insurance, tyres, and whether the car is roadworthy. When you take money and leave that wretched car to go, it causes an accident and kills people.”
The King also raised concerns about attempts to politicise the Service, saying it would erode its independence.
His Majesty recognises that some officers ignore laid-down processes, using political tactics such as lobbying to earn positions.
“When government changes, I hear some people lobbying to take a position when there is an incumbent IGP. Let us do it properly. Let’s stop that and accept that the senior and more qualified will take over…With the current president, I’m assured that there will be no interference. It will go through the process, and whoever is qualified will take over.”
