The Adjiringanor North Motorway Residents Association has organised a Christmas party for underprivileged children in the community.
The objectives of the party, which was attended mostly by children of squatters in the area, were to bring joy and hope to the less privileged at Christmas, promote community bonding and support, and instil in the children the spirit of giving and gratitude.
The party, which was on the theme: “Bringing joy and blessing to every child this Christmas,” saw the children take part in various fun competitions, including musical chairs, lime and spoon, and Gideon’s filling.
The first three winners of each competition received prizes, including school bags, stationery, storybooks, and snacks.
The Treasurer of the association, Patience Akosua Otoo, said they started the programme 10 years ago.
The essence was that, although the squatters had become part of the community, they could not afford special meals and other things for their children during the festive season.
The association, therefore, decided to organise the party so that the children would have that opportunity.
She said that, in addition to the special meals and soft drinks they offered the children at the celebrations, they also gave them gifts, some of which included school bags and play materials.
Support
She urged organisations to welcome and support children, explaining that the Bible charges Christians to let the children come to them, for theirs was the kingdom of Heaven.
A resident, Reverend Dr Steve Adarkwa, said that the birth of Christ brought good tidings of great joy for all people, including every child.
“We are celebrating Christmas with them so that they will know the meaning and the purpose of Christmas and for Christ to be at the centre of their lives,” he said.
He expressed the hope that the children would grow up to be well-nourished adults.
He asked society to celebrate the festive season with underprivileged children to create childhood memories of a lifetime for them.
The Minister in charge of the Most Rev. Professor Kwesi A. Dickson Memorial Methodist Church, Very Rev. Yaw Addai-Yeboah, whose church premises hosted the party, urged society to welcome, teach and guide children.
He said that by showing children love, they would also learn to give and to sacrifice.
