A district court in Kade, in the Eastern Region, has remanded five former students of Kade Senior High Technical School over the assault of a teacher during the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination.
The Kade District Court, sitting on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, ordered four of the accused persons, all aged 18 and above, to be held in prison custody.
The fifth accused person, a 17-year-old, was remanded into police custody. His case is to be handled by a Juvenile Court.
All five accused persons pleaded guilty and are expected to reappear before the court on January 20, 2026.
The victim, Michael Quayson, is a teacher at Kade Senior High Technical School. The case relates to an incident in which Quayson was assaulted after enforcing examination rules during the WASSCE at the school.
Reacting to the court’s decision, the Ghana Education Service in a statement issued on Thursday [Jan 8, 2026], said the remand demonstrated the Ministry of Education and the Service’s commitment to protecting teachers and ensuring the integrity of national examinations.
“This demonstrates the level at which the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service can go to safeguard and protect our teachers and uphold the integrity of the WASSCE,” the Service said in a statement issued on Thursday.
The Ghana Education Service also cautioned students against attacking teachers and urged them to desist from acts of violence against educators.
The court action follows an earlier incident which attracted public attention after a video circulated on social media showing Mr Quayson being assaulted. In a statement issued on December, 10, 2025, the Service said preliminary reports indicated the incident occurred on October, 5, 2025.
According to the statement, some former students confronted Mr Quayson after he stopped one of them from entering the examination hall to write the 2025 Christian Religious Studies paper.
The Ghana Education Service said the matter was not reported to school authorities or its offices until the video surfaced online.
