The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has denied using compulsion to make vehicle owners undertake the onboarding requirement for vehicles registered prior to 2023.
It said it would give the general public ample time to undergo the exercise so as to ensure improved safety, accurate data of active vehicles and easy retrieval of vehicle information.
It explained that the onboarding exercise is part of its processes to digitise its records by registering vehicles digitally to enable vehicles registered since 2023 to be issued with vehicle registration cards and titles.
Since its introduction in 2023, DVLA said it had continued to migrate manual registration data into digital formats for vehicle owners who have visited DVLA offices.
With the plan to roll out a new number plate, it argued that the registration process will be seamless if existing vehicle details are already on the digital platform.
It has thus encouraged all vehicle owners in that category to visit any DVLA office near them to undergo the onboarding process.
“This public appeal by DVLA has not placed any compulsion on any vehicle owner who had registered a vehicle before 2023.”
On the contrary, it said the Authority had encouraged vehicle owners to undertake the exercise at their convenience at any DVLA office.
In addition, the Authority intends to continue to use the roadworthy certificate renewal processes to initiate the migration of manually registered vehicles onto the digital platform.
“An attempt by the Authority to encourage vehicle owners to seize these opportunities to on-board cannot be construed as placing a strict timeline on vehicle owners to rush to DVLA offices to undertake the ongoing exercise.”
