Five-Storey 800-bed students’ accommodation project has taken off at Adaklu-Kodzobi in the Adaklu District of the Volta Region.

The GH¢80 million project being undertaken by the Global Evangelical Empowerment Union of the Global Evangelical Church is scheduled for completion in 12 months.

It includes an auditorium, stores, changing rooms, a maintenance room, a car park, greenery among other features.

Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony at the project site last Tuesday, the Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, said the project was a timely and strategic intervention by the church to address the accommodation needs of students in tertiary institutions in the regional capital.

He said the project’s location, which was very close to the main campuses of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) and the Ho Technical University (HTU), was most appropriate for its objective.

Mr Gunu said the project bore ample testimony to the church’s stance of readily stepping in to provide solutions to basic educational development needs in society.

The project, he said, would also attract other infrastructural and economic development activities to the area.

The regional minister renewed his call on the youth to take advantage of the National Apprenticeship Programme to acquire the relevant skills needed for such construction projects.

“It is high time we stopped going to Togo to recruit artisans for our own construction projects,” he said.

The Moderator of the Global Evangelical Church, Rt Rev. Prosper Dzomeku, said the project was inspired by the church’s commitment to service to humanity.

Godwin Dela Morkli, the Managing Director of M/S Jeamoh Blocker Ltd, the project contractor, gave an assurance that the project would be executed within the schedule.

He said, so far, 100 workers, including 20 women, had been recruited for the job.

The Adaklu District Chief Executive, Jerry Yaw Ameko, said the project would create brighter development prospects for the district.

He encouraged private transport operators to provide reliable bus services to enable students to commute between the hostel and their campuses.

Mr Ameko gave an assurance that the assembly would provide ample security around the hostel to ensure the safety of students.
