The Member of Parliament for Bawku Central and Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, has concluded a comprehensive tour of the Upper East Region, focusing on the banks of the White Volta and key dam systems to explore opportunities for sustainable, year-round agricultural production.
During the tour, Ayariga assessed the operational impact of existing irrigation projects, including the Vea and Tono dams, which are already empowering thousands of smallholder farmers across the region. A highlight of the visit was the Tono Irrigation Project in Navrongo, a 2,490-hectare enterprise supporting approximately 6,000 farmers, demonstrating the immense potential of structured irrigation systems to transform agricultural productivity.
“It is deeply affirming to witness these projects in action. The infrastructure is firmly in place, and the potential for expanded irrigation is extraordinary,” Ayariga said. “With over 220 dams and dugouts available for development, the Upper East Region can become a powerhouse for year-round food production.”
During his engagements, Ayariga observed thriving fields of rice, onions, tomatoes, and peppers, underscoring the viability of high-value crop cultivation in the region. He emphasized the strategic importance of leveraging these resources systematically to position the Upper East Region as a reliable hub for staple crops such as rice and maize.
“This initiative is not just about farming; it is about creating sustainable livelihoods, strengthening food security, and building economic resilience,” he added.
The tour also involved interactions with local farmers, traditional leaders, and technical officers to discuss practical measures that can enhance irrigation efficiency, improve crop yields, and support broader national development goals.
Ayariga’s visit reinforces his commitment to empowering farmers, promoting modern agricultural practices, and ensuring that northern Ghana contributes significantly to the nation’s food security and economic growth.
