The Independent Power Generators (IPGs), Ghana, have praised the Government of Ghana for settling a large part of the long-standing debts owed to power generation companies.
In a statement issued in Accra on January 12, 2026, the IPGs said the payments made in 2025 mark a major step toward restoring financial stability and confidence in the energy sector. According to the group, the clearance of these legacy arrears has helped improve operations and reduced pressure on power producers.
The IPGs commended the Ministry of Finance for mobilising the needed funds to support the sector, and the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition for ensuring discipline through the effective use of the Cash Waterfall Mechanism and other reforms. These measures, the statement noted, have improved payment performance across the energy value chain.
The power producers said the government’s actions send a strong message to both local and international investors that Ghana is committed to honouring its contracts and strengthening governance in the power sector. This, they believe, will help attract new investments, modern technology, and long-term partnerships.
The IPGs also reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Ghana’s energy security, economic growth, and industrial development. They pledged to continue working closely with government and sector agencies to ensure reliable power supply, promote transparency, and deliver value for money.
The group expressed confidence that the cooperation shown in resolving the arrears will strengthen the partnership between government and IPGs, and help build a stable, sustainable, and financially disciplined energy sector for the benefit of all Ghanaians.
IPGs statement came in responds to a release issued by the Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, announcing the Mahama Administration has paid a total of US$1.470 billion within its first year to clear long-standing energy sector debts and restore confidence in Ghana’s power industry.
