The Communications Director of the United Party (UP), Solomon Owusu, has hinted at plans to report a hospital to the United States Embassy over a disputed medical document.

The letter in question, dated May 14, 2025, and attributed to the Mayo Clinic, one of the top health facilities in the United States, claimed that former Minister of Finance Ken Ofori-Atta had prostate cancer.

However, responding to the situation following Ofori-Atta’s detention by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), on Joy Prime on Monday, January 12, 2026, he alleged that the letter was false.

“That is another criminal letter and I’m in the process of reporting that hospital to the US embassy for them to also take them on because, you see, we cannot be in a country where people will think that they will sit somewhere, and their institution’s name will be used to dupe the people of this country. [They were lying] absolutely and this has been proven,” he said.

Owusu questioned the authenticity of the supposed letter and linked it to wider legal and immigration concerns surrounding Ofori-Atta in the United States.

“Look, ICE, if there is anything to go by, and I have no reason to doubt what the Attorney General is saying, before your visa will be revoked, it’s based on about four or five factors,” he indicated.

Owusu listed these factors as fraud or misrepresentation, among others.

“Fraud or misrepresentation, that you made certain representations that the immigration officers have found out later that you lied, or you have engaged yourself in a criminal activity in the United States and so they must revoke your visa, or you are doing something that the visa that you are holding does not permit you to be working,” he said.

He added that revocation could also occur, “If you are holding a B2 visa, you are not supposed to be working, or you are no more admissible in the United States of America based on national security threats. So, which of these factors has caused him to be in detention?”

Background

The May 2025 letter, which was issued by Ahmed Abdalrhim, a doctor at the Section of International Medicine of Rochester, had indicated that the former finance minister had gone under the knife on June 13, 2025, and needs to recover fully before he can travel back to Ghana.

“I am writing to inform you that Mr Ofori-Atta has undergone an MR-guided biopsy and has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. A surgical intervention has been deemed necessary, after the testing and MRI and biopsy procedures in March 2025, as I indicated in my February letter. This surgical procedure has been scheduled for June 13, with Dr Paras Shah of the Department of Urology… It is hoped that a closer date may open up.
