During a campaign tour of the Adenta Constituency on Sunday, January 11, 2026, New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful Kennedy Agyapong made claims that have since drawn scrutiny within party circles.
Mr Agyapong asserted that Adenta was traditionally an NPP stronghold and alleged that the party lost the seat because former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia failed to campaign in the constituency. He further claimed that because the current Member of Parliament is related by marriage to Dr Bawumia, the former Vice President deliberately stayed away from the area, resulting in the loss of what he described as a “traditional NPP seat.”
Analysis
A review of electoral records from the Fourth Republic shows that Mr Agyapong’s claims are not supported by historical voting patterns in the Adenta Constituency.
Adenta was created in 2004 after being carved out of the Ashaiman Constituency. In that inaugural election, the NPP’s Kwadwo Hammond won the parliamentary seat.
However, subsequent electoral outcomes do not support the assertion that Adenta has been a traditional NPP seat. Since its creation, the constituency has participated in six parliamentary elections, with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) winning four of them.
Kojo Adu Asare of the NDC won the seat in 2008, followed by Ashie Moore in 2012. The NPP recaptured the seat in 2016 through Yaw Buaben Asamoah, but the NDC regained it in both the 2020 and 2024 elections through the incumbent MP, Mohammed Ramadan.
In summary, the NPP has won the Adenta parliamentary seat only twice since 2004, while the NDC has won it four times. Notably, in the last five parliamentary elections in the constituency, the NPP has secured victory only once.
Mr Agyapong’s claim that Dr Bawumia did not campaign in Adenta for the party’s parliamentary candidates is also contradicted by available evidence.
Video and photographic records show that Dr Bawumia visited the constituency and actively campaigned for NPP candidates during the 2020 and 2024 elections, both of which featured contests against NDC candidate Mohammed Ramadan.
Dr Bawumia was present in Adenta on November 27, 2020, to campaign for Yaw Buaben Asamoah, and again on September 6, 2024, to campaign for Akosua Manu as well as for his own presidential bid.
Verdict
The claim by Kennedy Agyapong that Adenta is a traditional NPP seat and that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia did not campaign in the constituency is FALSE.
