Surpassing 10,000 signatures marks a major milestone

Africans Rising is happy to announce that the African People’s Petition for a Borderless Africa has officially surpassed 10,000 signatures, marking a major milestone in a growing, people-led movement calling for free movement, unity, and dignity across Africa.

This is not just announcement but a clear signal to African governments, African union and the RECs that Africans are indeed ready for a borderless Africa therefore the ratifications of the free movement protocol should not wait anymore.

The African People’s Petition is part of the #BorderlessAfrica campaign, a people-led initiative geared towards calling for free movement and the ratification of the Free movement protocol of 2018.

For over a century, colonial borders imposed during the Berlin Conference have divided African communities, weakened economies, and undermined unity. Today, Africans are reclaiming their voice to demand what should never have been taken away: the right to move freely within Africa.

Despite the adoption of the African Union Free Movement Protocol (2018) and commitments under AFCFTA, progress remains unacceptably slow:

• Only 4 AU Member States have ratified the Free Movement Protocol

• Nearly half of Africans still require visas to travel within Africa

This gap between political commitments and lived realities is costing Africa jobs,

innovation, trust, and opportunity. Free movement is not a threat to Africa’s security or sovereignty; it is a foundation for integration, shared prosperity, peace, and dignity.

Surpassing 10,000 signatures is not the end; it is the beginning. The signatories represent youth, traders, creatives, women, diaspora Africans, and grassroots organisers across the continent and beyond. Their message is unified and unmistakable: a borderless Africa is a necessary first step to reparations.

Africans Rising calls on:

• African citizens to continue signing and amplifying the petition

• Media institutions to elevate this people-led demand for unity

• Policymakers and AU Member States to act with urgency and political courage

The African People’s Petition demands:

• Urgent ratification and implementation of the AU Free Movement Protocol

• Removal of visa and administrative barriers for Africans travelling within Africa

• People-centered and gender-responsive mobility policies

• An end to security-heavy border practices that criminalize African movement
