“We believe the constituency deserves representation that prioritises accountability, opportunity, and practical solutions to everyday challenges,” the party said.

Background

The Ayawaso East Constituency by-election was necessitated by the vacancy created following the demise of the former Member of Parliament, Naser Toure Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The Electoral Commission has yet to announce the election date.

The LPG’s decision brings another party into the fray, after the NDC and the New Patriotic Party had expressed their interest in contesting the by-election.

This follows the by-elections in Akwatia and Tamale Central, which were won by the NDC. There was no contest in Tamale Central after the NPP and other opposition political parties withdrew from the contest in honour of the late sitting MP, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, who died in the August 6, 2025 helicopter crash.
