The Chief Executive Officer of the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), Professor Nana Ama Browne Klutse, has enjoined media practitioners to remain committed in the national fight against illegal mining, locally known as galamsey.
She said in spite of risks and challenges in fighting galamsey, there should be no relentlessness in the quest to promote a healthy environment and drive sustainable development.
Prof. Browne Klutse, in the company of Ashanti and Eastern Regional Directors of EPA, Dr. Jackson Adiyia Nyantakyi and Sydney Danso, paid a courtesy visit to three journalists of the Kumasi unit of The Multimedia Group who were involved in an accident during an anti-galamsey operation.
The journalists, Nana Yaw Gyimah, Akwasi Adomako, and Joseph Obeng, were among five media personnel involved in a road accident during the EPA’s fight against illegal mining on November 6, 2025.
The victims sustained varying degrees of injury and were forced to abandon their duties for several months before eventually resuming work.
The visit by the EPA officials to Luv FM and Nhyira FM was to assess the current condition of the injured journalists and to ascertain how they are responding to treatment following the incident.
They were received by the General Manager of the Kumasi Unit of The Multimedia Group, Jimmy Aglah, and the News Editor, Kofi Adu Domfeh.
During the interaction, Prof. Browne Klutse expressed joy at seeing the journalists hearty. She assured them that an insurance compensation package was being processed for the victims.
“We won’t leave you behind; we are with you and don’t forsake us too. The insurance package is underway, the documentation has kept it long but it will come,” she assured.
As a token of support, the EPA presented the victims with bags of rice, boxes of tomatoes, and a cash donation.
Speaking on behalf of the injured journalists, Nana Yaw Gyimah expressed gratitude to the EPA for the timely visit.
“We are happy and thankful to be alive today. Our healing process was tough, but in all God has saved us. We do appreciate your visit as it has rekindled our relationship,” he said.
The EPA delegation later proceeded to visit the other two media personnel at Channel One TV and Media General who were also involved in the accident, accompanied by the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Kofi Adu Domfeh.
