A taxi driver was shot dead at Tetegu, near Weija, in the Greater Accra Region, following an encounter with a policewoman, the Ghana Police Service has confirmed.
The incident occurred on January 19, 2026, and resulted in the death of the driver, while the policewoman involved sustained injuries and is receiving treatment in the hospital.
In a press statement issued by the Public Affairs Directorate at the Police Headquarters on January 20, 2026, the police said preliminary investigations showed the shooting followed a confrontation between the two.
The taxi driver, who was operating a Hyundai i10 taxi, was rushed to the Police Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Richmond Mensah, acting Director-General of Public Affairs, said investigations also showed the policewoman was injured while attempting to leave the scene.
“Investigation further indicates that the policewoman was hit by a vehicle and sustained injuries to her head and both legs as she attempted to leave the scene.
She is currently on admission receiving medical attention,” the statement said.
Police said exhibits retrieved from the scene included one live 9mm round, a magazine, and one spent 9mm cartridge.
The Ghana Police Service said investigations into the circumstances surrounding the shooting are ongoing and updates will be provided as the process continues.
The identities of the deceased driver and the policewoman involved have not yet been disclosed.
