A ranking Member of Parliament has criticised recent enforcement actions against commercial drivers accused of overcharging passengers, labeling the approach as unhelpful and heavy-handed.

The Minority Caucus’s representative on Parliament’s Roads and Transport Committee, Kennedy Osei Nyarko, said this on the back of reports that approximately 15 drivers had been arrested by the GPRTU taskforce for fare violations.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story, the MP argued that coercion is not the solution, as no law permits such an action.

“You don’t go arresting people because you think the people are overcharging. That is not the approach I expect the GPRTU or government to use in resolving this matter.”

“I don’t think this high-handedness of resolving the matter or trying to coerce drivers will help; it will rather aggravate the situation,” Osei Nyarko stated, insisting on a more consultative and systemic approach to addressing transport fare issues.

He revealed that the matter is likely to be escalated when Parliament reconvenes.

Furthermore, Mr Osei Nyarko indicated that this specific concern would be added to an existing plan by the Minority to summon the sector minister for scrutiny.
